Millennium Development Goals Strategic Conference

The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in his forward to the 2007 MDG Annual Report noted, "We will have time to reach the Millennium Development Goals — worldwide and in most, or even all, individual countries — but only if we break with business as usual."

With less than 6 years to go, 2009 marks a turning point in our work to reach the Millennium Development Declaration. Although there have been many breakthroughs since 2000, we know we are not “on course to look back, in 2015, and say that no effort was spared” to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

MIDEGO took up this call to “break with business as usual ” and made it the focus of a unique day of innovative and strategic thinking:— On June 19th, 2009, MIDEGO and partners gathered to look at ways of strengthening our focus and accelerating reaching the MDGs.

Among the global health and development professionals present that day, a number of pioneering individuals that are already trying new and different approaches to reaching the MDGs presented their ground-breaking work. They included Sonia Sachs (Millennium Villages Project), Ray Martin (CCIH), Mariam Labbok (UNC), Donna Barry (Partners in Health), Padminy Murthy (NYMC), Neil Pakenham-Walsh, (HIFA 2015) David Patient (Empowerment Concepts) and Jack Bryant (JHU).

The meeting proceedings will be available in August on this webpage and submitted to the USG, WHO, UN Assembly and other interested parties later in 2009.
